Live WIC Healthy!

No matter where you live in Louisiana, your family can live WIC healthy every day! Just put these four rules into practice EVERY DAY, and you’ll all be healthier and stronger.  In addition, if you want tips for “picky eating”, check out our Tips for Picky Eating!

EAT 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables

Eat fruits and vegetables as a snack and with every meal. Be adventurous, try new fruits and vegetables. Sometimes it takes 7 to 10 tries before you like a new food. Involve the entire family in planning meals. Wash and chop fruits and vegetables so they are ready to eat. Eat together as a family!

LIMIT recreational screen time to 2 hours or less

Keep television and computer screens out of the bedroom. Turn off the television during meal time. Make a family agreement to limit time spent watching television and monitor your child’s viewing time.

GET IN 1 hour or more of physical activity

Find fun ways to incorporate physical activity into daily routines. Take daily walks as a family. Turn on music and dance with your children. Parents set examples for their children by being active and leading healthy lifestyles.

AND, 0 sodas and sweetened drinks – more water and low fat milk

Choose water over other drink options when you are thirsty. Keep a water bottle on hand and fill it regularly. Limit children between 1-6 years old to 4-6 ounces of juice per day.

Physical Activity

We should all really get an hour or more of physical activity each day. Including our kids! When we don’t get enough physical activity, it puts us at risk for some serious health problems.

It’s really simple. Just get your body moving! Walk, run, even dance your way to better health for at least an hour a day. Take the kids with you, or invite a friend. Have fun. Really have fun. Let what moves you, move you! It’s all good.

We should all be active. But what that looks like may be different for all of us. Here are some ideas for physical activity across all ages.

Breastfeeding

There is no better food for your baby’s first year than breast milk. In fact, it’s actually healthy for both of you, saves money, and helps you bond.

Breastfeeding has so many benefits for you and your baby.

breastfeeding
  • It helps you lose the baby weight
  • It provides the right nutrition in the right amount
  • Protects against allergies, sickness and obesity
  • Helps prevent Diabetes and Cancer
  • Helps prevent ear infections (and other infections)
  • Little to no constipation, diarrhea or upset stomach
  • Helps with healthy brain growth
  • It changes with your baby as they grow
  • It’s always there, always the right temperature and always free

WIC clinics offer help, including individual and group education. They have Lactation Consultants who can help show you the ropes and give helpful tips. You can also get a free breast pump for those times you aren’t able to breastfeed directly and most WIC sites have Lactation Rooms so you can feed or pump on site.
